Inspired by “Five Billion Day” (July 11, 1987) when world population reached 5 billion.
Established in 1989 by the UNDP Governing Council.
Dr. K.C. Zachariah, a World Bank demographer, proposed it.
First observed in 1990 across 90+ countries.
In 1990, UN General Assembly officially endorsed it as an annual event.
